Remove the child restraint from the vehicle and reinstall the child restraint. If, after reinstalling the child restraint and restarting the vehicle, the on indicator is still lit, check to make sure that the vehicle’s seatback is not pressing the child restraint into the seat cushion. Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. When on, the automatic dimming mirror dims to the proper level to minimize glare from lights behind you after dark. The mirror has a dual display in the upper right corner of the mirror face that shows the compass reading and the outside temperature. To turn the automatic dimming feature off or back on, press and hold nine seconds. The indicator light on the mirror is lit when the automatic dimming feature is on. It will be necessary to adjust the compass to compensate for compass variance if the vehicle is outside of zone eight. Under certain circumstances, as during a long distance cross-country trip, it will be necessary to adjust for compass variance. Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the mirror as that could cause the liquid cleaner to enter the mirror housing. After you stop pressing the button, the display will show a compass direction within a few seconds. Cleaning the Mirror Use a paper towel or similar material dampened with glass cleaner. If you cut too sharply into the right lane, you could hit a vehicle on your right. Check your inside mirror or glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. The green light indicator will illuminate. The rear camera vision system is now enabled and the display will slide out from the mirror normally. To manually slide out the rear camera screen for cleaning, do the following: 1. The camera uses a special lens. The distance of the image that appears on the screen differs from the actual distance. The area displayed by the camera is limited. 2-46 The camera does not display objects which are close to either corner of the bumper or under the bumper. If your airbags deploy, the system is designed to make an automatic call to OnStar Emergency advisors who can request emergency services be sent to your location. Use this button to dial numbers into voicemail systems or to dial phone number extensions. See the OnStar Owner’s Guide for more information. If the light next to the OnStar buttons is red, this means that your system is not functioning properly and should be checked by a dealer. If the light appears clear (no light is appearing), your OnStar subscription has expired. This system provides a way to replace up to three remote control transmitters used to activate devices such as garage door openers, security systems, and home automation devices. If you do not follow these actions, the device will time out and you will have to repeat the procedure. If the indicator light stays on continuously, the programming is complete and your garage door should move when the Universal Home Remote button is pressed and released. You do not need to continue the programming Steps 6 through 8 and can stop here. After you press this button, you will have 30 seconds to complete Step 8. 8. Immediately return to the vehicle. It can be raised to allow more room for the driver to enter and exit the vehicle. The tilt lever is located on the left side of the steering column, under the turn signal lever. These positions allow you to signal a turn or a lane change. To signal a turn, move the lever all the way up or down.Then release it. When the high beams are on, this indicator light on the instrument panel cluster will also be on. Hold it there until the wipers start. Then let go. The wipers will stop after one wipe. Hold the band on mist longer, if more wipes are needed. If you apply your brakes, the cruise control shuts off. CAUTION: Cruise control can be dangerous where you cannot drive safely at a steady speed. So, do not use your cruise control on winding roads or in heavy traffic. This, of course, disengages the cruise control. But you do not need to reset it.DRL can be helpful in many different driving conditions, but they can be especially helpful in the short periods after dawn and before sunset. Once you leave the garage, it will take about one minute for the automatic headlamp system to change to DRL if it is light outside. You can use them for better vision in foggy or misty conditions. The fog lamp button is located in the exterior lamps control. To turn the lamps off, press the button into the in position. With accessory power outlets you can plug in auxiliary electrical equipment such as a cellular telephone or CB radio. Your vehicle has two accessory power outlets located on the lower part of the instrument panel below the climate control system and there may be one located in the rear cargo area. Your ashtray is located in your center console area. The ashtray can be removed for cleaning. When the ashtray is removed, this area can also be used as a cupholder. A slight change in engine performance may occur when the air conditioning compressor shuts off and turns on again. You will know how fast you are going, about how much fuel you have used, and many other things you will need to know to drive safely and economically. The odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven, in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers (used in Canada). The odometer mileage can be checked without the vehicle running by pressing the trip information stem. The system checks the airbag’s electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. The system check includes the airbag sensor, the pretensioners, the airbag modules, the wiring and the crash sensing and diagnostic module. Your instrument panel has a passenger airbag status indicator. United States When you start the vehicle, the passenger airbag status indicator will light ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, for several seconds as a system check. It should go out once the engine is running. If it stays on, or comes on while you are driving, you may have a problem with the charging system. If one part is not working, the other part can still work and stop you. For good braking, though, you need both parts working well. If the warning light comes on, there could be a brake problem. If the ABS light stays on, turn the ignition off, if the light comes on when you are driving, stop as soon as it is safely possible and turn the ignition off. If the gage pointer is in the shaded area of the gage, the engine is too hot. It means that your engine coolant has overheated. If you have been operating your vehicle under normal driving conditions, you should pull off the road, stop your vehicle and turn off the engine as soon as possible. Failure to pass this inspection could prevent you from getting a vehicle registration. Here are some things you need to know to help your vehicle pass an inspection: Your vehicle will not pass this inspection if the check engine light is on or not working properly. Cruise Control Light This light comes on whenever you set the cruise control. The light goes out when the cruise control is turned off. See Cruise Control on page 3-11 for more information. Here are three things that some owners ask about.The odometer shows the total distance the vehicle has been driven in either miles for the United States or kilometers for Canada. Trip Odometer Press and release the reset stem until TRIP appears on the DIC display. Do not remove the key from the ignition. 2. See Engine Overheating on page 5-29 and Climate Control System on page 3-22 for more information. This message displays along with the ENG HOT message. See Brakes on page 5-38 for more information. Press and release the reset stem to acknowledge the message and clear it from the display. Reduced engine power can affect the vehicle’s ability to accelerate. If this message is on, but there is no reduction in performance, proceed to your destination. The performance may be reduced the next time the vehicle is driven. Under certain conditions, the battery warning light may also turn on in the instrument panel cluster. See Charging System Light on page 3-32. The battery will not be charging at an optimal rate and the vehicle will lose the ability to enter the fuel economy mode. CAUTION: This system provides you with far greater access to audio stations and song listings. Giving extended attention to entertainment tasks while driving can cause a crash and you or others can be injured or killed. Turn clockwise or counterclockwise to increase or to decrease the volume. DISP (Display): Press to switch the display between the radio station frequency and the time. When the ignition is turned off, press to display the time. Press to see the message. The message can display the artist, song title, call in phone numbers, etc. If the entire message is not displayed, parts of the message appears every three seconds. The display shows the bass or the treble level. If a station is weak or has static, decrease the treble. To adjust the bass and the treble to the middle position, press and hold this knob. If a CD is recorded on a personal computer and a description label is needed, try labeling the top of the recorded CD with a marking pen. A small bar appears under the CD number that is playing and the track number displays. Press either arrow again, to stop scanning. To play the song list, press the sounds and S-LIST displays. The recorded tracks begins to play in the order they were saved. Seek through the song list by using the SEEK arrows.When the road becomes smoother, the CD should play. The system is working properly.The longer range can cause station frequencies to interfere with each other. For better radio reception, most AM radio stations boost the power levels during the day, and then reduce these levels during the night. CAUTION: Assume that other road users (pedestrians, bicyclists, and other drivers) are going to be careless and make mistakes. There are good medical, psychological, and developmental reasons for these laws. The obvious way to eliminate the leading highway safety problem is for people never to drink alcohol and then drive. The brakes will wear out much faster if you do a lot of heavy braking. If you keep pace with the traffic and allow realistic following distances, you will eliminate a lot of unnecessary braking. The computer is programmed to make the most of available tire and road conditions. This can help you steer around the obstacle while braking hard. As you brake, the computer keeps receiving updates on wheel speed and controls braking pressure accordingly. Adjust your driving accordingly. The traction control system automatically comes on whenever you start your vehicle. To limit wheel spin, especially in slippery road conditions, you should always leave the system on. But you can turn the traction control system off if you ever need to. This is the only mode which will allow the rear axle to lock. See Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive on page 2-27 for more information regarding the transfer case and 4LO Lock mode. However, when the transfer case is placed in Four-Wheel-Low Lock mode, StabiliTrak is automatically disabled. See Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive on page 2-27 for more information. To help assist you with directional control of the vehicle, you should always leave the system on. Of course, the posted speeds are based on good weather and road conditions. Under less favorable conditions you will want to go slower. If you need to reduce your speed as you approach a curve, do it before you enter the curve, while the front wheels are straight ahead. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy. Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. Defensive drivers avoid most skids by taking reasonable care suited to existing conditions, and by not overdriving those conditions. But skids are always possible. The three types of skids correspond to your vehicle’s three control systems. Also, see Braking on page 4-3. Off-road driving can be great fun. The greatest of these is the terrain itself. In a way, off-road driving requires a different kind of alertness from driving on paved roads and highways. There are no road signs, posted speed limits, or signal lights. The tread of the tire is thicker and tougher than the sidewall of the tire and is more resilient to impact than underbody components.
