I originally purchased this as a gift for my girlfriend who is a Child Psychologist and keeps countless notebooks. Well, I had to try it before I gave it to her and unfortunate for her she can't have this one. This device works out of the box exactly as it is advertised. I am in LOVE with this. The only problem I have had is the software shipped was not compatible with OneNote 2010, but there is a free update on the ACECAD website that fixes this. The fact that I can use this to import handwritten project notes directly into OneNote has been a game changer for me. I recenetly did an observation of a Disaster Exercise at our local airport and took my notes on the ACECAD table. Within minutes or returning to the office I was able to email.pdf copies of my exercise notes to everyone involved. The OCR software included is a trial, which is fine with me because I didn't buy this for OCR. I have played with it a little and it seems to work as advertised although you have to have respectable handwriting (which I don't). I was disgusted with that other product for several reasons. First, on several occasions I will write notes and when I try to download the notes to my computer I will find lots of streaks in the document. Secondly, the pen was so big (almost the size of my arms!) that writing more than a few lines at a time was prone to make my fingers ache horribly. Finally, the free software that came with it was horrible. Very often giving very wrong conversions that I had to do a lot of editing even for neatly handwritten text. Worst of all, it will often want to send my documents via e-mail - for whatever reason I would not know. While shopping for this product I surveyed other products (some of them very high end electronic products) that can do handwriting recognition. First, I have written a huge volume of notes (completely finishing the 50 pages or so of the writing pad that came with the product). These were heavy lecture notes that I had been dreaming of typing out on the computer so I can easily make changes to them every year that I teach the course. In all these 50 pages I had written so far I only lost one page on the first day that I got the product. For some reason the page just disappeared. I later realized that it was most likely because I removed the USB cable connecting the ACECAD to my computer without first ejecting it. This MAY be the reason for the page losses a few people complained about. To cut a long story short since that first day, I never lost a single page - I always eject the product from my computer before disconnecting the cable. On other counts, the software MyScript Notes that I bought with the product is simply awesome. In the fifty or so pages that I wrote, I hardly make more than 5-8 corrections per page. I will buy the next update that they come up with. One thing though that I will like to see them add in the next update is recognition of greek letters. So far I got it to recognize one greek letter (mu). I have not tried others. The size of the ACECAD pen is just right and I write 5 to 10 pages at a time without feeling a pinch. Yes, the top is not all that easy to keep in place; but I consider these as trivial issues. Will I recommend this product? - Emphatic Yes. I have already been spreading the word around for anyone who has to take a lot of handwritten notes and will like to transcribe them to the computer without having to go through the rigors of typing on the keyboard. I brought ACECAD a few weeks ago after doing some research on how to save handwritten notes on my laptop or a remote drive on a server. I think I am quite happy with it, since the last three weeks I have been using it. The software, hardware installed quite easily. The pad faithfully records every stroke from my pen while I scribble notes, make diagrams or tables. The software is compatible with MS onenote which is a great way to archive all data and notes with an amazing amount of granularity in detail. I would highly recommend this for people who stay in the lab all day doing experiments, etc. There should be some way of preventing that. For now I have to make sure that my page number matches with the page number on the screen. It just takes some getting used to. 2. The handwriting recognition software is on a 30-day trial offer. AstroSeeker 4.0 out of 5 stars As it turned out my session with ACECAD tech support did not resolve my problem. My DigiMemo L2 still did not work and I had to return to Amazon for a replacement. Well the replacement is much better but with a few interesting issues that I am here to report. 1) First the pen and the notepad work very well as far as faithfully recording my hand writting. However one time I did had this experience when I turned on the pad and I did not see my last full page of ink data. It showed that the page was blank. Thus I thought it has lost my full page of data. But as I tried to open that page on my PC I found that the old page was there with the new writting on top of it. But that was the only isolated incident that have not repeated so far. In addition, when I wrote on the pad in the horizontal (landscape) orientation and it still record my hand writing so that was great! I thought. 2) I also tested it out using the SD card and it worked just as well. I was worry that it would accept a SD card but I used a 2 GB one and it worked fine. 3) Next I tested it out with rechageable AAA batteries on the notepad and the store-bought button cell battery on the pen and it still work very well. Also I am happy that I can buy the ink cartridges, paper pad, and both types of batteries for replacement at Office Depot.etc. I think any ink cartridge that has the same length and diameter will work. Regarding the software, I had these experiences to report: 1) when I tried to install the DigiMemo Manager Software using the DVD that came with this product my Mcaffee anti-virus software detected a Artemis Trojan. I heard some review on here mentioned this but I was still a little sock when It happened to me. Because of this I could not even run the setup program so I had to down load and install the software from online. 2) I have installed the software on both Window XP and 64-bit Window 7 and has some slightly mix results: On an older version of Window XP, the DigiMemo Manager does not display the horizontal grid lines on the page at all. I did not have this problem when I installed it on the more recent version of Window XP. Actually I did not mind this because don't want the horizontal grid lines and I prefer a total white blank page. However it is interesting to see inconsistent results like that. Then after doing some tests, I decided to run the antivirus scan on the Window XP machine. After the scan, I found that I can not even start the DigiMemo Manager. I think the scan may have removed something that it considered security risk. So I had to uninstall the software and reinstall it. Other than these problems I found that the software work very well on both window XP and Window 7. Regarding the On-Line writting feature, The User Guide said that if you have window 7, you have to run the software as administration to activate the On-Line writting. Well I found that if I do that, I can not activate the on line writting. So in short, the software work fine In both Window XP and 64-bit Window 7. However in Tablet mode, you have to turn the notepad in landscape orientation such that the buttons are on top for it to work. Other than these issues I am very happy with the product. It work very well when it does work. However be warn that this product is not idiot proof. It does require some patient you do need to treat it with respect and care. More over I have not tried the handwritting recognition software so I can not comment on that. I plan to try it and will report later. Finally I have not used this thing long enough to know how well it will hold up over time. Other reviewers can give you that info. However from my two weeks of experience I can give you these advices: If you plan to buy this product, be prepare to return it when it does not work. Thus I suggest you test the product out as soon as you receive it and return it promptly to Amazon for a replacement, if it does work to your liking. Don't even bother with the ACECAD tech support. If you are patient you will most likely receive one that will work from Amazon. Also as I said, you need to treat this product with great care and respect. Make sure you read the user mannual carefully and take care not to take any unneccessary risk. Make the batteries are always full for example. One more thing. If you need to remove the batteries from the pad, make sure you backup all your data before you do that. Otherwise you may lose all your data. Also if you update the software, you will need to uninstall the old one first. Finaly I would buy some third party waranty. By the way, I have read the reviews on a good number of other products that is similar to this one and I found they all have some form of problems or another. This is a tentative review. I am here to report my experience with this device as time go on and I will update this review and the rating as I have more experience with it. OK When I placed the AAA battery in the Pad and the cell battery in the Pen, then turn it on, I found this: As I started writting, I saw the pen Icon for a few writting strokes and then I just don't see the pen Icon anymore. The pen Icon displaying on the LCD is to indicate that the pad is recording your hand writting. No matter what I tried, I just can not see the pen Icon. I tried altering the pressure on the pen tip. I tried taking the cell battery out of the pen and put it back in. I tried turning the Pad off the switch it back on. Nothing! I just can not see the Pen Icon As I write. So I called tech support and they are very nice. They asked to try the following: 1) Take the cell battery out of the pen 2) Turn on the Pad, remove the paper pad and put only one sheet of paper on the Digit memo Pad. Make sure the pad has a blank page Icon displaying. 3) Take the digit pen, with the battery removed and write something on it At this point, I saw the pen Icon. Its weird because the battery is not in the pen. 4) then they asked to put the cell battery back in the pen and the paper pad back on the Digit Memo Pad and start writting. As I did this last step, everything seem to work. I am very happy at the moment and I am hoping everything will be smooth from here on. I have not tried the font recognition software, so I cannot comment on that. I left off one star because there is no place to store the pen. The pen is vital to the operation of the tablet. I take notes all day at meetings. I can upload all my pages (without scanning!) at the end of the day. It goes with me in my car for those quick OMG moments when I need to jot something down. It was a little hard getting used to advancing the pages since you cannot see what is on the page in memory. If you put page numbers on each paper sheet that correspond to the page number in memory you won't write over other memorized pages. Pretty simple, but not obvious until you mess up.
