Its diminutive yet ergonomically designed shape just fit beautifully in my hands, and most of the basic settings are adjustable using just a few fingers. The large lighted LCD display on the back of the camera is extremely readable, and makes it effortless to discern the settings of the camera and make quick adjustments. The body is also compatible with every EOS lens, which makes up the largest selection of lenses in the industry. It offers just about every feature any serious photographer could need, from an aperture priority mode to full manual operation, and yet remains accessible to anyone who wants to just pick it up, turn it on, and start taking pictures. All menu operations such as ISO speed changes and multiple exposure settings are just a few button presses away, and all are easy to set. The camera even offers useful modes such as Auto Exposure Bracketing, a feature that automatically changes the exposure up to 2 f-stops for 3 frames, effectively overexposing and underexposing the same picture. This is useful for getting the exposure just right, and has saved some of my best shots. The lens is also superlative. Going from a fairly wide 28mm to a moderate telephoto 90mm, the lens works suitably in almost every situation. The zoom is very smooth, and the auto focus is exceptionally fast. The clarity and quality of my pictures taken with this lens have been very good. I have only experienced a few small problems with this kit, but they are worth noting. The Rebel Ti has no spotmeter, and only uses Canon's partial metering mode, which sometimes has trouble with difficult exposures and strong backlighting. The camera is quite noisy when winding and rewinding film, and takes a few seconds to do both as it prewinds the film. Lastly, the lens has front rotating barrel which prohibits the use of circular polarizing filters, a fact I discovered the hard way. The lens is also a little noisy when focusing. The Canon Rebel Ti is a near perfect camera for a beginner looking for a solid starter camera or an advanced amateur needing to upgrade or a reliable backup. I love mine, and have no regrets with the purchase.The color, sharpness, and realism portrayed in the film, along the light-weight, durable, and attractive camera body makes it a popular model, with no shock. Although it's pretty simplistic, it's more than enough for both students and shutterbugs. The camera is very light and small. Most importantly, it accepts all Canon EF lenses, which is great. If you are a student and you're wondering whether to buy the camera body only or the camera with a kit lens, I would recommend you get the body only and get a different lens. That lens and this camera go together hand-in-hand; together they are still very inexpensive and light, so you should not have any hesitation to bring your camera everywhere you go. If you are looking for a modestly-priced but excellent zoom, you may want to consider the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 with Canon EF mount instead of Canon's own 24-85mm or 28-105mm (both of those are ok, but neither open up to f2.8, which, believe me, you will want as you progress with your studies). There are some limitations to this inexpensive camera as you would expect. The autofocus has only 3 focus points (my Digital Rebel has 7 points, and higher-end cameras have 45). There is no depth-of-field preview. Finally, in manual exposure mode, you control the shutter speed with the top dial, but to control the aperture you must simultaneously hold down a button and turn the dial (similar to my Digital Rebel, but higher-end cameras have two separate dials). Using the bulb mode will drain the camera battery, as power is used to keep the mirror up and shutter open. Depending on how long your exposure is going to be, you may want to use a new battery. What Kind of Film Does the Camera Use. The Canon Rebel uses 35mm film. This is the most common film available. The light tight metal cassettes make it possible to load the film in the daylight. You might be able to find rolls for sale at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and other stores. Those same stores will also be able to develop the film for you. However, they no longer do the development in store. They mail the film off to a lab to be developed and you will not get your developed negatives back. You don't need to use a store to develop your 35mm film. Instead you can just mail the film off yourself to a photo lab, such as The Darkroom. What film to use? 400 ISO is my default recommendation for any camera. The film is fast enough to use indoor and shade. Film with a lower ISO, like 100, requires more light to expose properly. This means using a larger aperture or longer shutter speed if you're not in sunlight. Unless you get the Rebel S, not having a built in flash is going to make things difficult. It would be better to buy a newer camera in the Rebel line than a flash. Unless you are going to be in full sun or use a flash, I would advise against using ISO 100 film. If you will have lots of light or are comfortable with using a flash ISO 100 film will produce images with less grain than ISO 400 film. Newer cameras can not use infrared film because they have infrared sensors to control the automatic film advance. The sensors will fog the film, making it unusable. Film ISO Settings The camera has an ISO range of 25-5000 for DX-coded film. The automatic ISO setting from the DX-coded film can be overwritten through the same process needed to set the ISO for non-DX-coded film. For non-DX coded film, the ISO can be manually set from 6-6400. This is done by setting the control dial to the ISO setting and rotating the command dial. One benefit is that a pentamirror weighs less. The light weight will make the camera more enjoyable to carry around and is fine for casual shooting. Metering is center weighted. This is standard for all film cameras released in the previous 2 decades. There are no problems with the camera's ability to selects the correct exposure. Auto Focus The camera has 1 autofocus point.
