Electrosurgery generally deals with electrical signal fr equencies in the range of appr oximately 200 kHz to 3.3 MHz (see Figure 1). Thi s is well above the human body’s inher ent frequen cy range of suscept ibili ty to the hazards of microshock. Figure 1 Figure 2 Frequency Spectrum Showing Range Current Density Differences of Frequencies for Electrosurgery at Surgical Site vs. Retur n Path Electrosurgery works based upon hea t generated by the density (see Figure 2) of the high frequen cy current being passed through h uman tissue. At the surgical site, the den sity is typically very high, resulting in hig h heat and a cutting or coagulating effect. The “return path” for the high frequency curre nt is much larger and consequently much less curre nt density exists at this area, which allows the high frequen cy energy to safely leave the body without any adverse effects. There are two basic m odes of electrosu rgery: bipolar and m onopolar. Bipolar surgery (see Fig ure 3) is accomplished by using two parall el poles in close proximity, where the flow of high frequency current is re stricted to the two poles, one bei ng the “source” and the other being the “return pat h”. Bipola r electrosurgery is typi cally used in neurosurgical and gynecological procedur es, an d in other proced ures where t here is concern due to i mplanted pacemakers and automatic defibrilla tors. In general, bipolar electrosurgery is safer that monopol ar electrosurgery, and the subsequent risks of high frequen cy burns at the return electrode site are avoided. Monopolar electrosurgery utilizes higher voltage le vels than bipolar, resulting in higher p ower delivered at the surgi cal site. The need for a well prepare d and maintained patient elec trode site is of paramount concern in monop olar electrosurgical applications, in order to prevent high fr equency burns at the patient return electrode site. The high frequency waveform pro duced by the electrosurgica l generator d etermines the physi ological effect of the application of this energy to the tissue in the body. The Cut mode of a n electrosurgical generator creates a continuous waveform, as shown in Figure 5. Differen t degrees of hemostasi s ( coagulation ) can be achie ved by utilizing varying degrees of “ Blended ” w aveforms as shown in Figure 6. Figure 5 Figure 6 Pure Cut - Pure Sin usoidal Wave form Blended W aveforms The Coag mode (see Figure 7) of an electrosurgical gene rator creates a waveform with la rge amplitude but short duration “spikes” to achie ve hemostasis (co agulation). The surrounding tissue is h eated when the wa veform spikes and then cools down (between spikes), producing coagulation of the cells. Fulguration is achieved in the Coag mode of the electrosurgical gene rator, with the tip of the surgical “a ctive electrod e” held above (but not in contact with) the tissue. Electrosurgical De siccation is achieved in either the Cut or Coag modes of the generator. The difference between Desi ccation and Fulguration is the tip of the “active electrode ” must contact the tissue as in Figure 8 in order to a chieve Desiccation. The more desired mode to achieve tissue Desiccation through direct tissue conta ct is the Cut mode. Older electrosurgical generators (those pr oduced prio r to around 1968) are gen erally ground-referenced devices and must be used with ext reme care to avoid unwanted “current division” and possible result ing high frequency burns at this site (or at multiple site s). This i s illustrated in Figure 9 below. Current division can occur at any point of contact with an earth grounded p oint, such as the fram e of the surgical tabl e or the outer chassis of another medical device. For the most part, t hese types of devices are no longer used in surgical proced ures, mainly due to advances in electrosurgi cal generator technology a nd concerns over safety. Copyright June, 2007 by BC Gr oup International, Inc.Along with this more reliable and more condense d electronics techn ology came the introduction of the isolated-outpu t electrosurgical generator (see Figure 1 0 below), thus elim inating the concern over un wanted cu rrent division and vastly improving patient safety. The outputs of thes e generators we re no longer earth ground -referenced, so even the best electrical grou nd-reference d contact made to the patient would not pre sent the risk of high frequency burns at alternate sites. Figure 7 Figure 8 Coagul ation Wavef orm Tissue Penetration: Cut vs. Co ag The shift in concern now focused on the quality of the patient return electr ode and electrode site, and over the succeeding years, many manufacturers introduced new monito ring techniques designed t o constantly measure the integrity of the patient electrode site in order to minimize the possibility of high freq uency burns at the patient electrode. The varying techn ologies introduced by t he various electro surgical gene rator manufacture rs over the years have generically be come know in today’ s market as the Contact Quality Monitor (CQM ) function (see Figure 11) of the electr osurgical generat or.In fact, there are mo re features and safeguards to test fo r proper operation on today’s averag e electrosurgical generator than ever. Patient Return Electrode: an electrically conductive plate or pa d (a lso known as the dispersive el ectrode) that recovers the high frequency current introdu ced into the patient’s body by the “active elect rode” during electrosurgery. This electrode minimizes the current density of this return current flow in order to minimize th e possibility of high frequency burns at this electrode site.Here i s a brief history of ESU t esting devices over the past 1 5 to 20 years. Analyzers are shown in the order of their introdu ction to the market. Bio-Tek Instruments RF-30 1: The very first offering in ESU ana lyzers by Bio-Tek Instruments. This “passive” 5 RF thermocouple ammeter t ype instrument got the job done. There are still quite a fe w RF- 301 instruments in use in the field toda y. The design was basic and rug ged. No Picture Available Neurodyne Dempsey Mode l 403A: The Neurodyne De mpsey (which l ater became Dyn atech Nevada Inc.) Model 403A was a very small- sized ESU tester with limited functionality. This was a passive technology d evice with an RF thermocou ple type analog amm eter and a single fixed 500. It was the company’s first dedicated ESU tester. There are ver y few of these units left in the market. Bio-Tek Instruments RF-30 2: The predecessor to the Bio-Tek RF-303, the RF -302 was a “passive” RF thermocouple ammeter type instrument. This gav e an advantage to the RF-302 above other competitive “active” t ype ESU analyzers avail able at time. The RF-302 offered a better high frequency r ange than some comp etitive “a ctive” units. Bio-Tek Instruments sold qu ite a few of these units in the market. This instru ment is ver y similar to the BC Biomedic al ESU- 2000A instrument that is still available today, for those cust omers who prefer a legac y type RF ammeter “passive” instrument appro ach to ESU generator testing. Dynatech Nevada Mo del 443: The D ynatech Nevada Mo del 443 was the company’s ver y first “active” type 6 design in ESU ana lyzers. Despite it’s active internal circu itry and measurement technology, the Model 443 still utiliz ed an analog meter. The Model 443 was disco ntinued shortly after the introduction of the Model 453A. Dynatech Nevada Mo del 453A: The pr edecessor to the 454A, the Dynatech Nevad a Model 453A was probably the very first “Hi-T ech” ESU analyzer on the market. It utilized active technology. Introduced in t he mid 1980’s, the Mod el 453A was in producti on until t he introduction of the Dynatec h Nevada Model 454A, starting in 1992 or 1 993. The 453A had a small LED 7-segment displa y and was a fairl y larg e instrument weighing well ov er 15 pounds. There are still many 453A ESU ana lyzers in use in biomedic al departments across the U.S. today. 5 Passive technology in an ESU Analyzer refe rs to an instrument that does not require any exter nal power source and simply meter s the RF energy without any electronic signal processing. Operational amplif iers, thermal converters, etc. Originally designed by D ynatech Nevada I nc. , the 454A ut ilize d industry standard c urrent sensing technology and offered accur acies of 5% of reading on RMS current and 10% of range on RMS power. For the the past decade, the 454A was c onsidered to be an electros urgery industry ico n, but despite this status in the market, it n eve r really attained any l evel of actual custome r recommendation for any of the leading elec trosur gery generator man ufactur ers. See Appe ndix A for full specifications on the discontinued M odel 454A. Fluke Biomedical RF-30 3 RS: Originally marketed as the Bio-Tek Instruments RF-3 03 RS, this is the current “mid-range” ESU analyzer offering from F luke Biomedical. The RF-303 RS d oes not utilize industry standard curr ent sensing techno log y, but uses simpl e voltage measureme nt instead. This product was designed during the peri od of time that Lionhear t Technologies o wned and operated Bio-Tek Instruments, DNI Nevada, and Dale Technolo gy. A concurrent companio n product to the RF-303 RS was originally introduced in 1 998 under the DNI Nevada (formerl y Dynatech Nevada) bran d as the Model 40 2A. The 402A was later re-branded as the Dal e Technology DALE30 00 following the acquisitio n of the biomedica l holdings of Lionheart Technologies by Fluke E lectronics (Fluke Biomed ical ) in 1993. Instrume nt specifications for the Fluke Biomedical (Bio-T ek Instruments) RF-303 RS, the DNI Nev ada 402A, and the Dale Technology D ALE3000 are ( were) essential ly identical. See Appendix B for full specificatio ns on the RF-303 RS. DNI Nevada Model 402A: The DNI Nevada Model 40 2A was the “sister product” to the Bio-T ek Model RF-303, introduced co ncurrently with t he RF-303 (s ee information above und er the RF- 303 RS ). Actual design, development, and m anufactu ring of the 402A and t he RF-303 took plac e at the DNI Nevada Inc. In order to make t he two products look sufficientl y different, and in order to somehow truly differentiate the two, the 402A was given an RS232 communications port and the RF-303 was given a batter y for portable op eratio n. Slightly different encl osures were also chosen, and the 402A was given an LED 7-segment d isplay while the RF-303 was given an LCD 7-segment displa y. The instrument fi rmware that operated the 402A and RF-303 was common between the produ cts, with firmware subroutines that recogni zed which instrument was being operated b y the microprocessor. The RS232 communic ations port was added to the RF-303 much later in time, follo wing the discontinuance of the 402A. When Fluk e Electronics (Fl uke Biomedical) acquired the biomedical hold ings of Lion heart Technologie s in 1993, the DNI Nevada Model 40 2A was soon after discontin ued and re-brand ed under the Dale T echnology br and as the DALE3000. Dale Technology DALE3000: The DALE3000 existed in the market for less than three- years before it was discontinued. The re-brandin g of the DNI Nevada Model 402A to the Dal e Technology DALE30 00 was concurrent with the relo cation of the Dale Technolog y business from its original location in T hornwood, NY to Carson Cit y, NV, in the then-existing Fl uke Biomedical manufacturing facilities (the original D ynatech Nevada manufactur ing facility and offices) in Carson City, NV. The discontinua nce of the DALE3000 was actually fairly close in ti me to the Fluke acquisition of Metron AS of Trondheim, Nor way, which brought the Metron QA -ES “high- end” ESU analyzer to the Fluke Biomedical famil y of products. BC Biomedical ESU-2000A: The BC Biomedic al ESU-2000A was origi nally introduced in th e year 2000, bas ed upon strong customer demand fo r a “simple but effective” legacy tester similar to the original Bio-Tek Instruments RF-302.RMS power reading accurac y is not specified by the manufactur er. The QA-ES does not utilize in dustry standard current s ensing technology. See App endix D for specifications o n the Metron QA-ES version of this analyzer. Fluke Biomedical instrument specific ations can be found o n the manufacturer’s web site. Unlike other mid-range anal yzers on the market, the ESU- 2300 utilizes industr y standard current sensing t echnology for impr oved accuracy and reliability. T he ESU-2300 offers the ability to connect an external load resistor, thus ensuring the ava ilability of the required test load no matter what the valu e is. External l oad resistors can be used i n additive mode (add the external l oad resistor value to a ny of the internal load va lues) or external only m ode (use only the value of the external load resistor). The release of the new BC Biomedi cal ESU-2000 Series, incl uding the ESU-2050 and ESU-2300 analyzers represents a paradigm shift in the level of technology offered for electro surgery generator testing. ESU-2050: Truly Unique in the Market From its original produ ct design pr oposal, the ne w BC Biomedical ESU- 2050 analyzer has been a totally different instrume nt as compared to the traditional approach to ES U testing.Testing with the new ES U-2050 analyzer is rem arkable ea sy, and requires minimal setup, as ca n be seen in Figure 13 below.Sinc e the formal discon tinuance of the 8 920A, several electrosurgical g enerator manuf acturers have search ed for a suitable replacement instrument capable of delivering the same fu nctionality and at the same lev el of accuracy as the 8920A. But none had been found up to and includi ng the beginn ing of 2007. The development of the new BC Biomedical ESU-2050 ESU analyzer was by design, int ended to provide a suitable replacement for the Flu ke Electronics 8920A instrum ents currently in use by these manufacturers. ESU-2050: Unprecedented 1% Ac curacy In ESU Testing The accuracy sp ecifications (see ESU-2050 specifications on Page 21) of the new BC Biomed ical ESU-2050 ESU analyzer are well beyond any com petitive ESU analyzer of the market today, meeting the requirements of even the most demanding elec trosurgical manufacturers. T he ESU-2 050 ESU analyzer allows the cu stomer to test according to the exact same methodology as the elect rosur gery generator manu facturers test their own products. This is an industry first. Now these manufa cturers w ill be using the exact same i nstrumentation for test and measurement that typical electr osurgery generator cu stomers do. ESU-2300: A More Conventional Approach For those customers that do not wish to make the quantum le ap from conventional ESU testing methodolo gies to the new ESU-2050 platform, the new BC Biomedical ESU-2300 analyzer offe rs a more conventional approach to ESU testing. ESU-2400: More High-End Technology to Come Is anything missing form the new BC Bi omedical ESU-2000 Series lineup. What about a “high-end ” analyzer. The new BC Biomedical E SU-2400 “hig h-end” ESU analyzer is currently un der active development. Stay tuned to BC Group International, Inc.This technology platform allows the instrument to aggre ssively digitize the RF signal, analyze it s component s, and provide highly accurate result s. No other ESU analyz er on the market today uses this type of technology platform. Not even the “high-end” competitive instrum ents offer this advance d level capability. M ost commerc ially available “active” ESU analyzers have used this technique for many years. The new BC Biomedical ESU-2 000 Series of analy zers breaks this “old technology” trend and introduces an ex citing new level of ESU measurement techn ology moving forward. Up To 32,768 Data Points. A higher setting requires more co mputation and is slower, but re sults in a more stable reading. This settin g also determines the “resolution” of th e stored and exp orted data sets for the captured elect rosurgical generator waveforms. The waveform data sets shown throug hout this document and in Appendice s E, F, and G all have 32,768 discrete data points. That is why we chose the exact same external lo ad resistors for use wi th our new BC Biomedi cal ESU-2050 analyzer: the proven Vishay Dale NH-250 series. See Appendix J for add it ional information on these precision p ower resistors. Thi s is why we chose to implement the more costly but more e ffective current sensing technology in our ne w ESU-2000 Series products. The simple fact is that current sensing is more a ccurate and more reliable than voltage measurement when it comes to ESU analyzers. But don’t just take our word for it. Ask your favorite electrosurgery manufacturer which te chnology they approve and u se. Working With The Best In Curre nt Sensing: Pearson Electronics When it comes to sensing high frequency current flow, Pearson Electro nics ( www.pearsonelectronics.co m ) is one of the very best companies in the ma rket today. We chose to utilize their current sensing transformers wit h both the ESU-2050 and ESU-2300 analyze rs. The Pearson M odel 411 (0.1:1 ratio) and Mode l 4100 (1:1 ratio) are the spe cified transformers for use with t he ESU-2050. These are the exact same transformers currently used by many major electro sur gery generator manufacturers. Electrosurgery generally deals with electrical signal fr equencies in the range of appr oximately 200 kHz to 3.3 MHz (see Figure 1). Thi s is well above the human body’s inher ent frequen cy range of suscept ibili ty to the hazards of microshock. Figure 1 Figure 2 Frequency Spectrum Showing Range Current Density Differences of Frequencies for Electrosurgery at Surgical Site vs. Retur n Path Electrosurgery works based upon hea t generated by the density (see Figure 2) of the high frequen cy current being passed through h uman tissue. At the surgical site, the den sity is typically very high, resulting in hig h heat and a cutting or coagulating effect. The “return path” for the high frequency curre nt is much larger and consequently much less curre nt density exists at this area, which allows the high frequen cy energy to safely leave the body without any adverse effects. There are two basic m odes of electrosu rgery: bipolar and m onopolar. Bipolar surgery (see Fig ure 3) is accomplished by using two parall el poles in close proximity, where the flow of high frequency current is re stricted to the two poles, one bei ng the “source” and the other being the “return pat h”. Bipola r electrosurgery is typi cally used in neurosurgical and gynecological procedur es, an d in other proced ures where t here is concern due to i mplanted pacemakers and automatic defibrilla tors. In general, bipolar electrosurgery is safer that monopol ar electrosurgery, and the subsequent risks of high frequen cy burns at the return electrode site are avoided. Monopolar electrosurgery utilizes higher voltage le vels than bipolar, resulting in higher p ower delivered at the surgi cal site. The need for a well prepare d and maintained patient elec trode site is of paramount concern in monop olar electrosurgical applications, in order to prevent high fr equency burns at the patient return electrode site. The high frequency waveform pro duced by the electrosurgica l generator d etermines the physi ological effect of the application of this energy to the tissue in the body. The Cut mode of a n electrosurgical generator creates a continuous waveform, as shown in Figure 5. Differen t degrees of hemostasi s ( coagulation ) can be achie ved by utilizing varying degrees of “ Blended ” w aveforms as shown in Figure 6. Figure 5 Figure 6 Pure Cut - Pure Sin usoidal Wave form Blended W aveforms The Coag mode (see Figure 7) of an electrosurgical gene rator creates a waveform with la rge amplitude but short duration “spikes” to achie ve hemostasis (co agulation). The surrounding tissue is h eated when the wa veform spikes and then cools down (between spikes), producing coagulation of the cells. Fulguration is achieved in the Coag mode of the electrosurgical gene rator, with the tip of the surgical “a ctive electrod e” held above (but not in contact with) the tissue. Electrosurgical De siccation is achieved in either the Cut or Coag modes of the generator. The difference between Desi ccation and Fulguration is the tip of the “active electrode ” must contact the tissue as in Figure 8 in order to a chieve Desiccation. The more desired mode to achieve tissue Desiccation through direct tissue conta ct is the Cut mode. Older electrosurgical generators (those pr oduced prio r to around 1968) are gen erally ground-referenced devices and must be used with ext reme care to avoid unwanted “current division” and possible result ing high frequency burns at this site (or at multiple site s). This i s illustrated in Figure 9 below. Current division can occur at any point of contact with an earth grounded p oint, such as the fram e of the surgical tabl e or the outer chassis of another medical device. For the most part, t hese types of devices are no longer used in surgical proced ures, mainly due to advances in electrosurgi cal generator technology a nd concerns over safety. Copyright June, 2007 by BC Gr oup International, Inc.Along with this more reliable and more condense d electronics techn ology came the introduction of the isolated-outpu t electrosurgical generator (see Figure 1 0 below), thus elim inating the concern over un wanted cu rrent division and vastly improving patient safety. The outputs of thes e generators we re no longer earth ground -referenced, so even the best electrical grou nd-reference d contact made to the patient would not pre sent the risk of high frequency burns at alternate sites. Figure 7 Figure 8 Coagul ation Wavef orm Tissue Penetration: Cut vs. Co ag The shift in concern now focused on the quality of the patient return electr ode and electrode site, and over the succeeding years, many manufacturers introduced new monito ring techniques designed t o constantly measure the integrity of the patient electrode site in order to minimize the possibility of high freq uency burns at the patient electrode. The varying techn ologies introduced by t he various electro surgical gene rator manufacture rs over the years have generically be come know in today’ s market as the Contact Quality Monitor (CQM ) function (see Figure 11) of the electr osurgical generat or.In fact, there are mo re features and safeguards to test fo r proper operation on today’s averag e electrosurgical generator than ever. Patient Return Electrode: an electrically conductive plate or pa d (a lso known as the dispersive el ectrode) that recovers the high frequency current introdu ced into the patient’s body by the “active elect rode” during electrosurgery. This electrode minimizes the current density of this return current flow in order to minimize th e possibility of high frequency burns at this electrode site.Here i s a brief history of ESU t esting devices over the past 1 5 to 20 years. Analyzers are shown in the order of their introdu ction to the market. Bio-Tek Instruments RF-30 1: The very first offering in ESU ana lyzers by Bio-Tek Instruments. This “passive” 5 RF thermocouple ammeter t ype instrument got the job done. There are still quite a fe w RF- 301 instruments in use in the field toda y. The design was basic and rug ged. No Picture Available Neurodyne Dempsey Mode l 403A: The Neurodyne De mpsey (which l ater became Dyn atech Nevada Inc.) Model 403A was a very small- sized ESU tester with limited functionality. This was a passive technology d evice with an RF thermocou ple type analog amm eter and a single fixed 500. It was the company’s first dedicated ESU tester. There are ver y few of these units left in the market. Bio-Tek Instruments RF-30 2: The predecessor to the Bio-Tek RF-303, the RF -302 was a “passive” RF thermocouple ammeter type instrument. This gav e an advantage to the RF-302 above other competitive “active” t ype ESU analyzers avail able at time. The RF-302 offered a better high frequency r ange than some comp etitive “a ctive” units. Bio-Tek Instruments sold qu ite a few of these units in the market. This instru ment is ver y similar to the BC Biomedic al ESU- 2000A instrument that is still available today, for those cust omers who prefer a legac y type RF ammeter “passive” instrument appro ach to ESU generator testing. Dynatech Nevada Mo del 443: The D ynatech Nevada Mo del 443 was the company’s ver y first “active” type 6 design in ESU ana lyzers. Despite it’s active internal circu itry and measurement technology, the Model 443 still utiliz ed an analog meter. The Model 443 was disco ntinued shortly after the introduction of the Model 453A. Dynatech Nevada Mo del 453A: The pr edecessor to the 454A, the Dynatech Nevad a Model 453A was probably the very first “Hi-T ech” ESU analyzer on the market. It utilized active technology. Introduced in t he mid 1980’s, the Mod el 453A was in producti on until t he introduction of the Dynatec h Nevada Model 454A, starting in 1992 or 1 993. The 453A had a small LED 7-segment displa y and was a fairl y larg e instrument weighing well ov er 15 pounds. There are still many 453A ESU ana lyzers in use in biomedic al departments across the U.S. today. 5 Passive technology in an ESU Analyzer refe rs to an instrument that does not require any exter nal power source and simply meter s the RF energy without any electronic signal processing. Operational amplif iers, thermal converters, etc. Originally designed by D ynatech Nevada I nc. , the 454A ut ilize d industry standard c urrent sensing technology and offered accur acies of 5% of reading on RMS current and 10% of range on RMS power. For the the past decade, the 454A was c onsidered to be an electros urgery industry ico n, but despite this status in the market, it n eve r really attained any l evel of actual custome r recommendation for any of the leading elec trosur gery generator man ufactur ers. See Appe ndix A for full specifications on the discontinued M odel 454A. Fluke Biomedical RF-30 3 RS: Originally marketed as the Bio-Tek Instruments RF-3 03 RS, this is the current “mid-range” ESU analyzer offering from F luke Biomedical. The RF-303 RS d oes not utilize industry standard curr ent sensing techno log y, but uses simpl e voltage measureme nt instead. This product was designed during the peri od of time that Lionhear t Technologies o wned and operated Bio-Tek Instruments, DNI Nevada, and Dale Technolo gy. A concurrent companio n product to the RF-303 RS was originally introduced in 1 998 under the DNI Nevada (formerl y Dynatech Nevada) bran d as the Model 40 2A. The 402A was later re-branded as the Dal e Technology DALE30 00 following the acquisitio n of the biomedica l holdings of Lionheart Technologies by Fluke E lectronics (Fluke Biomed ical ) in 1993. Instrume nt specifications for the Fluke Biomedical (Bio-T ek Instruments) RF-303 RS, the DNI Nev ada 402A, and the Dale Technology D ALE3000 are ( were) essential ly identical. See Appendix B for full specificatio ns on the RF-303 RS. DNI Nevada Model 402A: The DNI Nevada Model 40 2A was the “sister product” to the Bio-T ek Model RF-303, introduced co ncurrently with t he RF-303 (s ee information above und er the RF- 303 RS ). Actual design, development, and m anufactu ring of the 402A and t he RF-303 took plac e at the DNI Nevada Inc. In order to make t he two products look sufficientl y different, and in order to somehow truly differentiate the two, the 402A was given an RS232 communications port and the RF-303 was given a batter y for portable op eratio n. Slightly different encl osures were also chosen, and the 402A was given an LED 7-segment d isplay while the RF-303 was given an LCD 7-segment displa y. The instrument fi rmware that operated the 402A and RF-303 was common between the produ cts, with firmware subroutines that recogni zed which instrument was being operated b y the microprocessor. The RS232 communic ations port was added to the RF-303 much later in time, follo wing the discontinuance of the 402A. When Fluk e Electronics (Fl uke Biomedical) acquired the biomedical hold ings of Lion heart Technologie s in 1993, the DNI Nevada Model 40 2A was soon after discontin ued and re-brand ed under the Dale T echnology br and as the DALE3000. Dale Technology DALE3000: The DALE3000 existed in the market for less than three- years before it was discontinued. The re-brandin g of the DNI Nevada Model 402A to the Dal e Technology DALE30 00 was concurrent with the relo cation of the Dale Technolog y business from its original location in T hornwood, NY to Carson Cit y, NV, in the then-existing Fl uke Biomedical manufacturing facilities (the original D ynatech Nevada manufactur ing facility and offices) in Carson City, NV. The discontinua nce of the DALE3000 was actually fairly close in ti me to the Fluke acquisition of Metron AS of Trondheim, Nor way, which brought the Metron QA -ES “high- end” ESU analyzer to the Fluke Biomedical famil y of products. BC Biomedical ESU-2000A: The BC Biomedic al ESU-2000A was origi nally introduced in th e year 2000, bas ed upon strong customer demand fo r a “simple but effective” legacy tester similar to the original Bio-Tek Instruments RF-302.RMS power reading accurac y is not specified by the manufactur er. The QA-ES does not utilize in dustry standard current s ensing technology. See App endix D for specifications o n the Metron QA-ES version of this analyzer. Fluke Biomedical instrument specific ations can be found o n the manufacturer’s web site. Unlike other mid-range anal yzers on the market, the ESU- 2300 utilizes industr y standard current sensing t echnology for impr oved accuracy and reliability. T he ESU-2300 offers the ability to connect an external load resistor, thus ensuring the ava ilability of the required test load no matter what the valu e is. External l oad resistors can be used i n additive mode (add the external l oad resistor value to a ny of the internal load va lues) or external only m ode (use only the value of the external load resistor). The release of the new BC Biomedi cal ESU-2000 Series, incl uding the ESU-2050 and ESU-2300 analyzers represents a paradigm shift in the level of technology offered for electro surgery generator testing. ESU-2050: Truly Unique in the Market From its original produ ct design pr oposal, the ne w BC Biomedical ESU- 2050 analyzer has been a totally different instrume nt as compared to the traditional approach to ES U testing.Testing with the new ES U-2050 analyzer is rem arkable ea sy, and requires minimal setup, as ca n be seen in Figure 13 below.Sinc e the formal discon tinuance of the 8 920A, several electrosurgical g enerator manuf acturers have search ed for a suitable replacement instrument capable of delivering the same fu nctionality and at the same lev el of accuracy as the 8920A. But none had been found up to and includi ng the beginn ing of 2007. The development of the new BC Biomedical ESU-2050 ESU analyzer was by design, int ended to provide a suitable replacement for the Flu ke Electronics 8920A instrum ents currently in use by these manufacturers. ESU-2050: Unprecedented 1% Ac curacy In ESU Testing The accuracy sp ecifications (see ESU-2050 specifications on Page 21) of the new BC Biomed ical ESU-2050 ESU analyzer are well beyond any com petitive ESU analyzer of the market today, meeting the requirements of even the most demanding elec trosurgical manufacturers. T he ESU-2 050 ESU analyzer allows the cu stomer to test according to the exact same methodology as the elect rosur gery generator manu facturers test their own products. This is an industry first. Now these manufa cturers w ill be using the exact same i nstrumentation for test and measurement that typical electr osurgery generator cu stomers do. ESU-2300: A More Conventional Approach For those customers that do not wish to make the quantum le ap from conventional ESU testing methodolo gies to the new ESU-2050 platform, the new BC Biomedical ESU-2300 analyzer offe rs a more conventional approach to ESU testing. ESU-2400: More High-End Technology to Come Is anything missing form the new BC Bi omedical ESU-2000 Series lineup. What about a “high-end ” analyzer. The new BC Biomedical E SU-2400 “hig h-end” ESU analyzer is currently un der active development. Stay tuned to BC Group International, Inc.This technology platform allows the instrument to aggre ssively digitize the RF signal, analyze it s component s, and provide highly accurate result s. No other ESU analyz er on the market today uses this type of technology platform. Not even the “high-end” competitive instrum ents offer this advance d level capability. A higher setting requires more co mputation and is slower, but re sults in a more stable reading. This settin g also determines the “resolution” of th e stored and exp orted data sets for the captured elect rosurgical generator waveforms. The waveform data sets shown throug hout this document and in Appendice s E, F, and G all have 32,768 discrete data points. That is why we chose the exact same external lo ad resistors for use wi th our new BC Biomedi cal ESU-2050 analyzer: the proven Vishay Dale NH-250 series.
