Noisy entry-level diesel The starting point for the diesel engine range in the Mercedes E-Class saloon is the E200 CDI, which uses a 136bhp 2.1-litre engine. It has enough oomph to feel just brisk enough, helped by a standard six-speed manual gearbox, but it needs to be worked quite hard for much of the time to get the best from it. This, in turn, means the engine is often quite noisy and it intrudes on the otherwise tranquil nature of the E-Classs’ cabin. This is doubly a shame as the C200 CDI offers a good spread of economy and emissions to appeal to those on a tighter budget or company car drivers looking to reduce their tax burden. Even so, we would recommend looking to one of the more powerful turbodiesel engines to gain a more peaceful and restful way of travelling in the E-Class. Facelift in 2013 In 2013 a major facelift was applied to the E-Class. A new front headlamp system with a single lamp replacing the twin lamps is the most noticeable change. The trims have been altered too, with the two choices now SE and AMG Sport. The engines have been given quite an overhaul too, with a hike in efficiency across the range.
